Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM)
Secondary TA's and non-specialist teachers
This programme has been designed to support secondary teaching assistants and non- specialist teachers in developing their mathematical subject knowledge and pedagogy so that they understand how children grasp and retain mathematical concepts. Giving participants a secure understanding of how children learn, will enhance levels of confidence and allow them to better support and teach pupils in the classroom.
The programme is based on the four core modules:
• Number sense
• Additive reasoning
• Multiplicative reasoning
Who is this for?
Teaching Assistants and non- specialists in Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth who would like to enhance their specialist knowledge for teaching or supporting mathematics in the classroom.
This may be particularly relevant for TAs who have not, recently, received maths-specific training.
What is involved?
All sessions have been designed to take place online allowing greater flexibility for staff with no travel commitments.
Times: 1.15pm – 3.15pm
• Session 1 - Thursday 11 February 2021
• Session 2 - Thursday 25 February 2021
• Session 3 - Thursday 25 March 2021
• Session 4 - Thursday 06 May 2021
• Session 5 - Thursday 17 June 2021
Enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key structures in each mathematical area covered
Understand the key elements that form number sense, forms of addition and subtraction, forms of multiplication and division, and forms of fractions, including precise language, structures and representations
Review their practice as a result of the sessions and make specific adaptations to impact on pupil outcomes.
What is the cost ?
The SKTM – Teaching Assistant programme is funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
