NCETM and Maths Hubs

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) is funded by the Department for Education and led and delivered by Etio, with MEI as a key partner. It is integral to RISE delivery.

We were set up in 2006, and our remit is to support the ongoing professional development of all those who teach maths, particularly through our coordination of the Maths Hubs Programme, and with teaching for mastery as an underpinning principle of our work. Our aim is for all those learning maths to enjoy the subject, and to appreciate its power and value in the wider world. To achieve this, we want everyone teaching maths to feel confident in their teaching, and to share a passion for the subject with their pupils. Therefore we aim to support heads, senior leaders, heads of maths, maths leads, teachers and teaching assistants to improve maths teaching in state schools across England.

There are 40 Maths Hubs that serve the whole of England, forming the national Maths Hubs Network. Each Maths Hub is open to working with any state-funded schools and colleges, from Early Years providers to post-16 institutions, in the geographical area that it covers.

Each Maths Hub is a partnership of schools, colleges, trusts and other organisations working together to provide support for maths teaching in a particular region of England. A Maths Hub Partnership is made up of partners who provide the hub's local leaders of mathematics education (LLMEs), those who provide members of the Strategic Board, and those who provide members of the hub's Leadership and Management Team, and the Lead Institution. A hub’s work takes many forms and includes face-to-face CPD and online support. Every hub runs several projects each year which enable teachers and teaching assistants to work collaboratively with the support of Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLMEs).
