Developing A Level Pedagogy

Developing A Level Pedagogy

This Work Group, run in cooperation with the Advanced Maths Support Programme, aims to improve the teaching of AS and A level mathematics in participating schools, particularly in response to the demands of the reformed courses. It will be run by Carlos Karingal, Key Stage 5 Coordinator at Chestnut Grove, and Jo Morgan, Mathematics Consultant at the Harris Federation and of Resourceaholic fame.

The Work Group will consist of 2 full days (09.30 – 15.00) and four twilight sessions (16.30 – 18.30), each addressing a different pedagogical aspect of the courses. The content of the twilights will be in response to areas of development that participants identify in the first full-day session. These might include some of the following:

  • Developing problem solving
  • Communicating mathematically
  • Modelling
  • Retrieval practice
  • Direct instruction
  • Flipped learning

Audience:

This course is targeted at Heads of Department, 2 i/cs, Key Stage 5 Coordinators, or any teacher with an ability to lead change within their departments at Key Stage 5. Participants would be expected to attend all sessions (or send another representative from their school), and undertake gap tasks that address the focus of each session.

  • Full Day 1: Thursday 6th December, 2018 – Department self-evaluation & problem solving
  • Twilight 1: Thursday 17th January, 2019
